Accommodations for Emotional Support Animals Under Attack
Fair housing broadly is under attack, and protections for emotional support animals are in the crosshairs. HUD's recent memo which directed its Office of Fair Housing to deprioritize assistance animal cases and withdrew longstanding guidance that advocates and housing providers have relied on for years has created real uncertainty for advocates, service providers, and people who depend on assistance animals for safe and stable housing.
Our colleagues at the Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative have written an excellent breakdown of what this memo means in practice. Just as importantly, the post clarifies what the memo doesn't mean. The law has not changed. The Fair Housing Act still stands. And we can still be fierce, effective advocates for people who need emotional support animals in housing.
